Fifty Days of UFO 50: Day 12

The spiraling wreckage of a drone clipped the helicopter's rear rotor, causing it to list directly into the stream of hot plasma. It dipped out of sight for a moment before slamming into the cliff below. Sunshine was beating down into the open convertible, so hot and bright that the explosions barely registered.

Ocean air mixed with a distinct ozone tang that the gun emitted whenever it started to lose its charge. Three more drones popped as they made contact with the energy projectiles; even half-strength shots tore through matter and air alike. The arc of the road ahead graciously offered yet another opportunity to feed the beast of a weapon. It was hard to break the habit of using the hand-brake to drift into the turn, but the gun itself was wired into that part of the console in lieu of a handle. Friction and kinetic energy were converted directly into death-dealing plasma.

As if giving the driver an excuse to unleash it, even larger swarms of aircraft converged above the speeding car, only to be cut down. The last of the falling debris forced the vehicle to brake lightly before swerving and speeding further down the coastal highway.

Both the weapon and the whip carried a sense of wanting to be home free, but odds were this was just another lull in reinforcements. Still, it was nice to drive in peace for a while.
The drugs really started to kick in by the time the sun was setting, turning the water and sky a vivid lavender as the burnt umber silhouettes of palm trees whipped past. When the aerial assault resumed, the attackers looked like platonic solid shapes wrought in gaudy neon. A flock of rotating yellow cubes returned fire before succumbing to the hail of death fanning out from the cherry red convertible. Synth-heavy tunes blasted from the stereo as a massive orange obelisk hovered into view ahead, bisecting the pavement with an impossibly girthy vaporwave beam of teal energy.

Either they'd called in some sort of extra-terrestrial backup, or this really was the good stuff.

Seaside Drive (May, 1989, 1-2P, Arcade, Shooter) "Nothing's more relaxing than a nice long drive by the sea... complete with plenty of gunfire!"

"The first game directed by artist Shayn North, who also crafted the game's unique visual style."
